Grading System For State Engineering Colleges Soon

Engineering colleges in the state will soon be graded on the basis of facilities and quality of education they provide to students. The grading will be done by the commissionerate of technical education with the help of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU-Hyderabad).
The grades will be made public through the websites of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) and affiliated universities.
According to officials of higher education department, the colleges will be grouped into two categories for grading purposes.
The colleges with over four years experience will be in one category and those that have one to four years in the second category.
The colleges will be graded on the basis of their infrastructure facilities, teaching and non-teaching staff strength, research and development, library and other teaching aids that they offer. The decision to grade colleges was taken as several complaints about lack of facilities in the engineering colleges in the state had come to the notice of the higher education department.
“The colleges will be inspected every year and grades will be updated,” said D N Reddy, vice-chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, who is part of the high-power committee which looks into infrastructure facilities in engineering colleges in the state.
The committee is headed by M Laxminarayana, commissioner, technical education.
The committee is expected to submit a report to the higher education department on the quality of technical education in the state by the end of this month. It is also mandated to suggest ways to improve the quality of education in the state.
According to the initial information which the committee gathered, most of the colleges in the state might not qualify in several categories of merit that will be made part of the grading system.
